Championing fairness for all

Together with our customers, members, colleagues and partners, The Co-operative Bank and Coventry Building Society have a shared vision of equality. One where we will always champion inclusion and diversity.

Equality, inclusion and diversity

We've always believed in equality and inclusion for all. And that everyone has, and deserves, an equal place in society. That’s why across our Group we have an inclusive and inspiring working culture and we support our local communities to make meaningful, societal change.

Making society better for all

  • Our co-operative values drive us to make society better for everyone, regardless of sexuality, race, gender or ability.

  • Our vision of equality is shared with our customers, members, colleagues and partners. At The Co-operative Bank, we're guided by our unique, customer-led Ethical Policy. Our customers tell us what matters to them, and we take action on it. That means they decide what causes we support and who we do and don’t provide banking services to.

  • When our customers say they want us to stand up for human rights and equality, we will. That’s why we refuse banking services to organisations that advocate discrimination or incite hatred.

Proud to support Pride

We’re incredibly proud to be part of Pride festivals throughout the UK, and especially in our hometown of Manchester, where we’ve sponsored Pride since 2016. We can't wait to be part of the new Manchester Village Pride this year.

And since joining the Coventry Building Society family, we're excited to also be supporting Warwickshire Pride, where we'll be hosting the dog show on the festival site in Leamington Spa.

Our support for Pride up and down the UK is led by our LGBTQ+ colleague inclusion group, Proud Together. Along with our colleagues and partners, we’re proud to send a message to Manchester and beyond that we will continue to campaign for greater equity, diversity and inclusion for all. We’re proud to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and to contribute to the creation of equal opportunities for everyone in our communities.

Our inclusive working culture

We’re passionate about our commitment to inclusion and diversity. This is championed by our colleague inclusion networks, which fall under six themes:

Our Access network for disabled colleagues, neurodivergent colleagues and their allies raises awareness of disabilities and neurodiversity, and empowers colleagues in reaching their full potential.

Our Proud Together network is supported by a committee of both those in the community and allies, whose aim is to provide support for LGBTQ+ colleagues and promote key dates and themes throughout the year, and lead on Pride festivals.

Our REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) network is open to all colleagues, whatever their race, ethnicity and cultural heritage, and works closely with our Asian network and Black network members across the Group. The networks raise awareness of cultural significance as well as creating opportunities for colleagues to thrive, connect and empower each other, helping to shape the future for people of all races.

Our Gender Networks include Elevate, the overarching gender network, working closely with the Women's, Women in tech and Menopause networks to help us create a gender-balanced society where everyone has fair opportunities. Members make connections, share experiences, inspire and empower each other on topics relating to gender.

The purposes of this group of networks are to raise awareness of and educate people around social mobility; provide career development support and networking opportunities for employees at the beginning of their professional journeys (Futures) and raise awareness and understanding of what it means to be a service leaver, a reservist, a spouse or a family member of military personnel (Beyond the Armed Forces).

The networks for colleagues with family and caring responsibilities. Their purpose is to share information, support and learn from one another, with the Carers network raising wider awareness of carers and the challenges they face and the Parents and Family network providing a safe space to discuss different family-related topics, raising awareness of relevant issues and support available as well as challenging existing and progressive themes.
